Last year, the Men’s Breakfast group at the First Congregational Church in Milford was looking for additional ways to become more ‘Active and Visible’ in the community. The idea was floated of joining the state’s Sponsor-A-Highway program. It was agreed that this would be a good way for Men’s Breakfast to manage a community-focused project and include the whole congregation in the effort. George Murphy and Dave Hinckley took on this project, attended the state’s safety program and scheduled the first cleanup for June 9th. The weather did not cooperate; a light rain drenched the crew who pulled together and got the cleanup done.
With the spring cleanup fresh in their memory, weather was the primary concern for George and Dave as they prepared for the Sponsor-A-Highway fall cleanup on Saturday, October 13th. Most of the week was wet and cold, reminiscent of last spring’s cleanup, but they needn’t have worried. Saturday dawned cool but sunny and by the time the crew headed out to their appointed section of Route 13 it had turned into a spectacular fall day.
George and Dave, in dual roles as both project leaders and cooks, provided a fabulous breakfast. Afterward the group headed out and picked trash from a 2 mile stretch along Route 13 from North River Road. In about 2 hours the group collected 20 bags of trash while enjoying a time of community service and fellowship.
